(Karen Shakhnazarov, 1988, Soviet Union, 102 minutes)
An Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style “what you bring to it is what you’ll see in it” type of movie, Karen Shakhnazarov’s Soviet whatsit Zero City finds an everyman from Moscow (Leonid Filatov) who visits a remote city where nothing makes sense in this surrealist/absurdist gem. Calling more to mind what you’d see coming out of the Prague of Kafka and Švankmajer and/or the Helsinki of Kaurismäki, Zero City is ready to be rediscovered in a beautiful restoration executed by Deaf Crocodile (Ilya Muromets, Delta Space Mission). With music by Eduard Artemyev, who also wrote the score for the Tarkovsky classics Stalker, Mirror, and Solaris.
In Russian with English subtitles.
