In this epic World War I romantic action drama, two hometown rivals, Jack Powell (Charles Rogers) and David Armstrong (Richard Allen), enlist and train as combat pilots in the Air Service. The two compete for the attention of Sylvia Lewis (Jobyna Ralston), while Mary Preston (Clara Bow), desperately loves Jack. David and Jack endure a tough training period losing a tent mate, Cadet White (Gary Cooper), in an air crash, but the experience brings them closer. They graduate and head to France to fight the Germans. Mary eventually joins the war effort and becomes an ambulance driver. She has a brief encounter with Jack while he is on leave. Jack and David fight in the epic Battle of Saint-Mihiel. As what happens in war, tragedy strikes that changes all of their lives. Director Wellman utilized his wartime aviator experience and the cooperation of the US War department to create some of the best flying sequences ever captured on film.
