About this Event
(Barbara Loden, 1970, USA, 1 hour 43 minutes)
After appearing in supporting roles in Wild River and Splendor in the Grass—both directed by her future husband Elia Kazan—and doing some stage and TV work in the early 60s, Barbara Loden wrote, directed, and starred in the 1970 film Wanda, with which we are kicking off our ongoing Tuesday night American Independents program. Focusing on a complicated, flawed woman the likes of which tended not to be depicted in cinema, especially without willful demonization on the part of the filmmakers, Wanda follows the titular character (Loden), aimless and presumably an alcoholic, as she has just left her husband, given up custody on her kids, and drifts, eventually accidentally getting caught up with a bank robber. In 2022 Wanda tied for #48 on Sight & Sound’s influential film poll of the 100 greatest films of all time.
