(Julien Faraut, 2021, France, 100 minutes)
In time for this year's Tokyo Olympics we're proud to feature Julian Faraut's new documentary The Witches of the Orient, which focuses on the legendary women's volleyball team from Japan that took the Olympic gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo games amidst an unprecedented winning streak. Cutting between contemporary footage of the team practicing and playing, modern interviews with some of the teammates, and anime sequences for extra punch, Faraut (John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection) explores the makings of what at the time seemed like an unbeatable team.
