(Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2018, Turkey, 188 minutes)
In his first film since the Palme d’Or-winning Winter Sleep, Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan here follows recent college graduate Sinan as he returns to his hometown, ostensibly to save money to publish his first novel, but in the process invariably struggling with the area and the people who made him who he is. After a run of strong films that would be the envy of any world cinema director, with The Wild Pear Tree Ceylan matures to a new strain of personal filmmaking, and many will find it to be his most resonant film as a result.
In Turkish with English subtitles.
