(Hal Hartley, 1989, USA, 90 minutes)

A major title of the 90s American independent cinema boom, and one of the first films Miramax released after their massive success with sex, lies, and videotape, writer/director Hal Hartley’s debut The Unbelievable Truth finds rising college freshman Audry (90s it girl and future writer/director of the film Waitress, Adrienne Shelly) ditching her high school boyfriend, becoming a model, and growing somewhat obsessed with a mysterious stranger in town, Josh (Robert John Burke, a few years before Dust Devil), an ex-con rumored to have murdered his high school girlfriend’s father. Also featuring Edie Falco in one of her first roles, Bill Sage (last on our screen in Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin), Matt Malloy, and even Film Series favorite director Kelly Reichardt in an especially tiny role.
