(François Truffaut, 1975, France, 96 minutes)

Screening in 35mm!

The Story of Adèle H. (L’histoire d’Adèle H.), Isabelle Adjani’s breakthrough role, was shot when she was just 19 years old, and for her performance she went on to receive her first César nomination for Best Actress (which she did not win, unusually for her), not to mention a Best Actress nomination at the American Oscars, a rarity for a non-English-language role such as this. Based on the real diary of Adèle Hugo, daughter of Victor Hugo, who falls madly in love with the British soldier Lt. Pinson (Bruce Robinson, later writer/director of Withnail & I), to the point of harassment and self-destruction. From legendary French New Wave director François Truffaut (The 400 Blows, Day for Night) and shot by Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven).

In French with English subtitles.

With an introduction and post-film discussion from Cliff Froehlich, retired executive director of Cinema St. Louis.
