Allegra Hyde, author of three award-winning books of fiction, will visit Webster University on April 3-4. The highlight of her visit will be a reading on Thursday, April 4, at 1:30 in the University Center's Sunnen Lounge. A Q&A and book-signing will follow.

Hyde's first book, a collection of stories called Of This New World, was the winner of the 2016 John Simmons Short Fiction Award from the University of Iowa Press. Her debut novel, Eleutheria, was named a best book of 2022 by the New Yorker. Her most recent book, The Last Catastrophe, was named a best story collection of 2023 by the Chicago Review of Books, Electric Lit, and Our Culture Magazine; a best LGBTQ+ book of the year by them; and was an editor's choice selection of the New York Times.

"Allegra Hyde is an amazing writer," said Webster's Director of Creative Writing, Murray Farish. "She writes about the oldest stuff in the worldlove, betrayal, loss, the flaws and triumphs of the human heart. And the newest stuffthe perils of a future riven by climate change. Her prose is absolutely gorgeous."

As part of her visit, Hyde will also meet with a class at Webster to talk about her writing, and will work one-on-one with selected Webster Creative Writing students.

Hyde's visit is co-sponsored by the Faculty Speakers Committee; the Sustainability Studies Program; and the Novel Neighbor, the official bookseller of the David Clewell Visiting Writers Series, which is named in honor of the longtime Webster English Department professor and former Missouri Poet-Laureate.

"We also want to thank our incredibly kind donors for their generous, ongoing support of the Clewell Series," Farish said. "Their gifts allow us to bring writers like Allegra to meet our students, and help make the Clewell Series readings premier events on the St. Louis literary calendar."

Hyde's reading is free and open to the public, and all Webster students, faculty, and staff are welcome. The event is also available on Zoom

Anyone wishing to donate to the Clewell Series can do so here.
