About this Event
When Steve Hochstadt began interviewing former Shanghai refugees in the 1980s, as research for his book, the heroic escape to Shanghai was a largely unexplored aspect of the Holocaust experience. Join us in the interview with Steve Hochstadt, Professor Emeritus of History at Illinois College, and delve into the narratives of one hundred refugees located by Hochstadt. The interview will be moderated by Dr. Warren Rosenblum, Professor of History, Politics, and International Relations at Webster University.
"Shanghai was one of the major safe havens for Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. In China Jews built a vibrant community, a testament to their indomitable determination not just to survive, but to live full and complete lives. Steve Hochstadt tells their story through a remarkable collection of interviews gathered over many years and his own insightful commentary. Exodus to Shanghai is a great book that reveals a little-known aspect of the fate of Jews under Nazi persecution." - Eric D. Weitz, Dean of Humanities and the Arts at City College, City University of New York
The “Talk to the Author” program is organized by the Webster University Confucius Institute.
