(Kore-eda Hirokazu, 2008, Japan, 115 minutes)
In a return to something of the Ozu mode in which he made Maborosi, Still Walking finds three generations of the Yokoyama family gathering together at their old family home for a ceremony of some sort. Though family drama does indeed play out, as with most of Kore-eda’s films, there is a strong observational aspect at play. Where other directors would focus harder on the mystery of the motivation behind the reunion, Kore-eda is much more interested in how the Yokoyamas do and do not fall back into familial roles and routines.
In Japanese with English subtitles.
