“School Wars: Connecting the Scopes Trial to Book Banning”
John Chappell, Department of History, Political Science, International Relations, and Religious Studies
Professor Chappell’s lecture will provide context on contemporary book banning movements by 1) looking briefly at the Scopes Trial as a precursor to the culture wars of today as both involve conflicting definitions of freedom, and 2) discussing the controversial history book Forget the Alamo that caused an uproar in Texas when it came out last year--including a prominent history museum canceling an event with the authors after facing public and political pressure.
