(Michael Moore, 1989, USA, 1 hour 31 minutes)

Michael Moore’s wildly popular debut feature Roger & Me rapidly established Moore as a filmmaker, satirist, and political commentator to be listened to, which statuses he still enjoys today. The gist of the film is that it follows Moore as he tries to score an interview with General Motors’ CEO Roger Smith, whose closing of auto plants in Moore’s hometown of Flint, Michigan created untold hardship for the community and its citizens. A sensation in film festivals and arthouse theatres on release, Roger & Me broke through in a way that documentaries rarely do in American movie theatres, going on to make about 55 times its budget at the box office alone. Not for nothing that even now Moore holds the record for making the highest-grossing documentary of all time, 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11.
