Lauded photographer Stephen Perloff’s “North Dakota — and Other Landscapes” features frigid landscapes in North Dakota abstracted with snow. While many of Mr. Perloff’s projects have involved the built environment and human-altered landscapes, this is his first project where the landscape itself takes precedence, though with clear, if sometimes subtle evidence of human presence.
These photographs are supported by a selection of early landscapes made more as stand-alone images as parts of other projects, in part to show the contrast with this earlier, more traditional way of seeing, and the evolution of possibilities in the current digital environment with the North Dakota pictures.
Mr. Perloff is an author, critic, curator and professor of photography. “North Dakota — and Other Landscapes” runs at the May Gallery November 1 to 27. Join us Friday, November 8 for a lecture with the artist at 3pm, Sverdrup 123 followed by a reception from 5-7pm in the May Gallery.
Perloff, a vanguard in the photographic community, is the founder and editor of The Photo Review, a critical journal and editor of The Photograph Collector, the leading source of information on the photography art market. He has taught photography and the history of photography at numerous Philadelphia-area colleges and universities and is the recipient of two grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts for arts criticism. He was the recipient of the Sol Mednick Award for 2000 from the Mid-Atlantic region of the Society for Photographic Education, the first annual Vanguard Award from the Philadelphia Center for the Photographic Image in 2007, and the Colin Ford Award for Curatorship from the Royal Photographic Society in 2012.
His photographs have appeared in numerous exhibitions and reside in many museum and private collections. He has been widely praised for his writing about the photography art market, including his detailed auction reports, and for his extensive reporting. His articles have been reproduced in numerous journals.
