Guest Lecture – Dr. Stijn Thoolen, European Space Agency - Research Medical Doctor for ESA 2019-2020 Antarctic Winter Over Expedition at Concordia Station.

We are happy to invite you to virtually participate in a guest lecture delivered by Dr. Stijn Thoolen via video link from  Antarctica, titled “Maintaining Physical and Mental Health at the Edge of the World: What Living in Antarctica Teaches Us About Coping With Isolation and Confinement”. The lecture is being given as a part of Dr. Vladimir Ivkovic’s BIOL-3600 class “Brain and Behavior in the Extremes” that investigates what happens to the human brain and behavior when we are exposed to isolated, confined, and extreme environments. Dr. Thoolen is currently based at Concordia station in Antarctica as the European Space Agency's research physician for 1 year. His lecture will cover topics ranging from adaptation to the isolated, confined and extreme environment of Antarctica, its implications for human space exploration, and the lessons learned for coping with global need for physical/social distancing due to COVID-19 pandemic.
