Markie in Milwaukee

From 12/4 to 12/10, Film Series patrons can rent Markie in Milwaukee, dir. Matt Kliegman. Set in Milwaukee and immersed in in a community of Evangelicals, minister Markie Wenzel spends years as a transgender woman, only to detransition back to cisgendered Mark, at a critical point of loss and loneliness. Bearing witness to the intricacies of feeling whole internally while being simultaneously isolated from the outside world, this documentary highlights the myriad of grievances that come with being out of the closet vs. deep inside of it. The film teeters between the varying identities Markie/Mark experiences and performs while struggling to allow their internal and external worlds to coexist. Markie in Milwaukee exposes the difficult back and forth, the deconstructing and reconstructing of identity that many do behind closed doors. Heartbreaking and incredibly revealing, this LGBTQ film should be met with caution by those triggered by the content and should serve as a lesson in accountability for everyone else.
