małni - towards the ocean, towards the shore

(Sky Hopinka, 2020, USA, 80 minutes)

A hit at the True/False Film Festival last year, Sky Hopinka's małni - towards the ocean, towards the shore forges new cinematic language to explore the Chinook death myth.  We follow Jordan Mercier and Sweetwater Sahme in the Pacific Northwest as questions of mortality are raised, but in the absence of more traditional documentary methods the reality of watching małni is akin to floating, dreaming, experiencing.  Hopinka's choices show a deep respect for the Chinook culture, to include not just subtitling the Chinuk Wawa language in English, but also subtitling the English into Chinuk Wawa.
