(Kore-eda Hirokazu, 2013, Japan, 121 minutes)
Sort of like what one might imagine if a filmmaker were to combine elements of Kore-eda’s Shoplifters and/or Nobody Knows with something like Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation, Like Father, Like Son looks at two families, one financially sound and respectable, the other financially shaky and messy in appearance. They find that their six-year-old sons are biologically one another’s, swapped at birth in the hospital where they were born. Making use of a sensitive tone, Kore-eda manages to examine the human side of such a problem without needlessly exploiting its inherent melodrama.
In Japanese with English subtitles.
