Director Flora Lauten and playwright Raquel Carrio -- co-founders of internationally-renowned Cuban theater company Teatro Buendia -- will open their residency as the College of Arts & Sciences's 2015 Global Leaders in Residence with a keynote presentation titled "La Tempestad: Theatre as a Game."
The keynote will give participants an inside look at Teatro Buendia’s distinctive approach to writing, staging, and producing their own adaptation of Shakespeare's play "The Tempest." Teatro Buendia’s version, "Otra Tempestad," combines Shakespeare's familiar characters with the characters of Afro-Caribbean mythology, bringing elements of music and dance to the stage alongside Shakespeare-in-translation.
Lauten and Carrio will talk about the challenges of literary and theatrical adaptation, share their philosophy of theatre as a game, and discuss the unique experience of working as an artist in a Communist State.
