About this Event
(Frankie Chan, 1986, Hong Kong, 100 minutes)
Prior to his career as a director, Wong Kar Wai spent most the 80s as a screenwriter in Hong Kong television and film. During this time, he often worked with multi-hyphenate Frankie Chan, then a writer/director/actor/producer/musician, and with whom he continued to collaborate as Wong got internationally established; Chan went on to write the score for Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, and the original score for Ashes of Time (which is not the same as the one heard in Ashes of Time Redux). From their early collaborations, Goodbye My Love is perhaps the most memorable, as A) it’s goofy in a way that Wong fans will be very surprised by, B) it stars our friend Frankie himself as a criminal named Morrie, and C) the romantic interest, Lindy Ng, an orphaned young woman suffering from cancer who has to provide for her two younger siblings, is played by a young Joan Chen, known to many Americans as Josie Packard in Twin Peaks, among countless other prominent roles in film and television.
In Cantonese with English subtitles.
