Digital Worlds: Possible Futures Lecture and Reception

The Webster Vienna Alumni Association in cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce invites you to the lecture Disruptive Digital Worlds: Possible Futures” by Prof. Robin Mansell, Visiting Professor at Webster Vienna Private University.

It will take place on Wednesday, March 22, at Palais Wenkheim, Praterstrasse 23, 1020. The lecture will begin at 18:00 (doors open at 17:30) and will be followed by a reception.

In this lecture we examine competing claims about the consequences of digital innovation and the governance measures that are being introduced in response to the “gatekeeping power” of large technology companies.  With digital governance tools – competition law, content moderation rules and more - being introduced, we consider whether these tools are effective in mitigating harms linked to prevailing business strategies.

Will digital governance result in substantially enhanced fundamental rights protection or will it yield only incremental changes and continuing risks of harm to individuals and the democratic social order?

Robin Mansell PhD is Professor Emerita of New Media and the Internet in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and at Webster Vienna Private University, as a Dr. Elizabeth Chopin Endowed Visiting Professor at the Department of Media Communications.

She has training in several social science disciplines including psychology, social psychology, politics and economics and is a strong advocate of interdisciplinary research when it builds on the strengths of disciplinary inquiry. Her research and teaching focus on media and communications regulation and policy, internet governance, privacy and surveillance, digital platforms, socio-technical features of data and information systems, and the social, political and economic impacts of innovation in digital networks and applications. Her current research addresses the political economy of ‘platformization’ and ‘datafication’ and its consequences for society in diverse contexts around the world.

Prof. Mansell was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa by the University of Fribourg in 2020 and was recipient of the C. Edwin Baker Award for the Advancement of Scholarship on Media, Markets and Democracy 2020 (ICA Communication Law & Policy and Philosophy, Theory and Critique Divisions).
