Desolation Center

(Stuart Swezey, 2018, United States, 94 minutes)

Operating as something of a companion piece to Michael Azerrad’s classic text Our Band Could Be Your Life, Stuart Swezey’s Desolation Center looks at the Reagan-era remote desert shows in California that featured bands like Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, Minutemen, and Einstürzende Neubauten. Director Swezey himself was the principal creator and organizer of these hugely influential shows, for which he took inspiration from Werner Herzog’s film Fitzcarraldo, wherein the protagonist attempts to stage an opera in the remote jungle. Desolation Center affords many pleasures, not least of which rare concert footage and interviews with the musiciansand attendees.
