Belonging in the Balance: How Anti-DEI Narratives Shape Self-Doubt and Success

As diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs face mounting scrutiny and dismantling across corporate, educational, and government institutions, the cultural debate often hinges on a false dichotomy between DEI and merit. This Curious Conversation will examine the psychological toll of this framing, particularly for racialized minorities and other minoritized groups, within the broader context of American culture’s “meritocracy myth.” Grounded in scholarship on impostor phenomenon, we will explore how deeply ingrained cultural narratives about merit and DEI may shape feelings of self-doubt, belonging, and the need to justify success for people of color. Additionally, we will discuss emerging research on the racialized impostor phenomenon, highlighting how systemic and societal factors contribute to these experiences. By unpacking these dynamics, this Curious Conversation aims to foster a nuanced understanding of merit, inclusion, and psychological well-being in today’s evolving landscape.
