Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters

(Rosalynde LeBlanc and Tom Hurwitz, 2020, United States, 90 minutes)

Centering around the groundbreaking 1989 dance performance of “D-Man in the Waters,” which was choreographed by the acclaimed Bill T. Jones, Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters explores the greater context surrounding the piece, created at an incredibly devastating time in American history. Driven by a need to discuss the AIDS epidemic which was then at its peak, the dance deals with the trauma and inconceivable loss of loved ones in a time of crisis. Heavily inspired by the death of Jones’ partner and longtime collaborator, Arnie Zane, and the rapidly declining health of one of the company members, Demian Acquavella, “D-Man in the Waters” became a dance of resistance. Can You Bring It is an emotional journey of revolutionary art manifested through expression of unfaltering resilience.
