Operation SOPHIA: Can Civil-Military Cooperation Work in Migration Control?
Date: Wednesday, March 4th 2020
Time: 13:00 - 14:00
Place: Webster Geneva, Classroom LLC 1
Do you know what role the military are playing in fighting human smuggling in the Central Mediterranean? Or what it means to support the training of Libya's Coast Guard and Navy in a post-revolution environment that became a hub for irregular migration to the European Union?
Join us for a Brown Bag Seminar on 4 March, at 1:00 pm, to learn about Operation SOPHIA, the first EU military operation & naval mission launched to disrupt the business model of human smugglers, prevent loss of life at sea and fight oil and arms smuggling.
LTJG Francesca Morando, IT Navy Reserve, Arabic-speaking cultural mediator and veteran of Operation SOPHIA, will join Oreste Foppiani, Head of the International Relations Department, and Oana Scarlatescu, Research Fellow, for a discussion on all things military in migration control.
