Two of the biggest hits at the Webster Film Series in the past five years have been Lee Chang-dong’s Burning, based on a Haruki Murakami short story from the collection The Elephant Vanishes, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film Drive My Car, based on a Murakami short story from the collection Men Without Women. Now, thanks to animator/director Pierre Földes (son of Oscar-nominated animator Peter Földes), we have a new film that is an adaptation of multiple Murakami short stories, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. Strange journeys, natural disasters, cats, reckoning with collective trauma—all of your favorite Murakami tropes are present.
