Black Mother

(Khalik Allah, 2018, USA, 77 minutes)

After the unexpected success of Khalik Allah’s first feature Field Niggas—which he initially posted on YouTube, where it was discovered and went on to get significant and celebrated festival play—erstwhile photographer Allah (Souls Against the Concrete) goes to Jamaica to pay tribute to both the island’s people en masse and his own mother in singular. Born to a Jamaican mother and Iranian father, Allah is a master of poetic imagery and nonlinear editing, shifting dreamily between 16mm, Super 8, Hi-8 Tape, Mini DV, and HD Video.
