A presentation by Professor Dani Belo (History, Politics, and International Relations) and student Josh Hayes.
Since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza conflict in 2023, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) was significantly enhanced on the battlefield, marking a transformative shift in modern warfare tactics. AI technologies were leveraged for real-time surveillance, target identification, and decision-making processes. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have utilized advanced AI algorithms to analyze vast amounts of data from drones, satellites, and social media to identify threats and coordinate responses with unprecedented speed and accuracy. This technological integration enabled more effective strikes on militant targets while minimizing collateral damage. However, the deployment of AI in this conflict also raised ethical concerns regarding the potential for increased automation in warfare and the implications for civilian safety and international humanitarian law. The 2023 Israel-Gaza war thus highlighted both the strategic advantages and the moral dilemmas posed by the growing reliance on AI in military engagements.
