Beginning as a film school assignment to make a documentary portrait of a person and ending after more than 13 years of shooting footage on and off, director Lea Glob’s Apolonia, Apolonia becomes almost as much about Ms. Glob’s relationship with her subject, painter Apolonia Sokol, as it is about Ms. Sokol herself. Both are good company to be in. Sokol was born to bohemian parents in an underground theatre in Paris (we see footage of both her conception and birth), hung out with artists in her youth, and went on to attend art school at the esteemed Beaux-Arts de Paris. Around this time (not long after Glob started filming her) Sokol develops a deep bond with Oksana Shachko, one of the founders of the Ukrainian feminist group Femen, and upon graduation struggles to find her footing in a male-dominated art world.
In Danish and French with English subtitles.
