(Kore-eda Hirokazu, 2009, Japan, 116 minutes)
In many ways a departure in both plot and tone from Kore-eda’s better-known works, Air Doll still has lots to recommend it, and indeed shows his range as a director. A lonely, grumpy Japanese man owns an inflatable doll which he uses for companionship. In one of the unlikelier Wizard of Oz references in cinema history, the doll, Nozomi, discovers she has a heart and comes alive. Now played by multilingual Korean star Doona Bae (The Host, Cloud Atlas), Nozomi learns to fill her literal emptiness and lack of past with human attributes learned while working in a DVD rental store. Shot beautifully by Hou Hsiao-hsien’s usual cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bin, Air Doll has plenty to say about modern consumer culture and fantasy.
In Japanese with English subtitles.
