About this Event
(Wang Bing, 2024, France/Luxembourg, 227 minutes)
The second of master documentarian Wang Bing’s Youth trilogy, which looks at the lives of young garment workers in the Zhili district of Huzhou City (we played the first, Youth (Spring), in January 2024), Youth (Hard Times) as can be guessed by the title is the bleakest of the bunch. A workshop owner beats one of his employees and flees, leaving his workers behind with no paychecks and no job. In the wake of the incident the workers come together with an eye toward solidarity and salvaging what they can, while maintaining a realistic grasp of what all is working against them. If you haven’t seen Youth (Spring) and/or can’t make it to the following night’s Youth (Homecoming), don’t worry, as these films are more companions to one another than any type of continuous story.
In Mandarin with English subtitles.
