Calling to mind the American avant-garde, Werner Herzog’s Fata Morgana is an (arguably?) non-narrative film inspired by Mayan creation theory and composed of footage shot in Africa wherein Herzog, among other things, was trying to make a filmic record of mirages (the “fata morgana” of the title). With voiceover by hugely influential German film theorist Lotte Eisner reading the Popul Vuh and with a soundtrack composed of disparate pieces including Mozart’s “Coronation Mass” and a handful of Leonard Cohen tunes.
