Running consecutively as a companion exhibit will be photos by St. Louis artist Juno Musonda. In “WILLED,” Musonda presents a multi-media assemblage of photography, film, typography and Riso prints exploring three Missouri state parks through the individuals who assembled and gave the land that became them: Hawn State Park, Don Robinson State Park and Elephant Rocks State Park.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. In 2020, he founded Ope Outdoors, a brand that celebrates Missouri and Illinois landscapes through graphic design, group hikes and community cleanups. “We do have vibrant outdoor culture here, and it was just odd to me that we didn’t have a brand celebrating these parks and places.”

Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, Seeds is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. With remarkable intimacy, the film documents their everyday lives - cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. The camera relishes simple moments - conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment - turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other. But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story. Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in 1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. Seeds emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories - somber, bitter, and sweet. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize – Documentary at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

35th anniversary shows! 4K restoration!

After making her name as a model and in glorified arm candy roles in 80s Hong Kong cinema (not least of which the Police Story movies), Maggie Cheung started garnering the respect she deserved as an actress between the one-two punch of Wong Kar Wai’s Days of Being Wild and Stanley Kwan’s Center Stage. In the latter, Cheung plays the real-life silent cinema star Ruan Lingyu, the quote-unquote “Greta Garbo of China,” who starred in a few major Chinese silent melodramas before committing suicide at the age of 24. Director Kwan (Rouge) deftly mimics all manner of modes of cinema, but Cheung (In the Mood for Love) is head-spinning in her navigation between Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, and English, all the while painting a deeply empathetic and ultimately tragic character.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. In 2020, he founded Ope Outdoors, a brand that celebrates Missouri and Illinois landscapes through graphic design, group hikes and community cleanups. “We do have vibrant outdoor culture here, and it was just odd to me that we didn’t have a brand celebrating these parks and places.”

35th anniversary shows! 4K restoration!

After making her name as a model and in glorified arm candy roles in 80s Hong Kong cinema (not least of which the Police Story movies), Maggie Cheung started garnering the respect she deserved as an actress between the one-two punch of Wong Kar Wai’s Days of Being Wild and Stanley Kwan’s Center Stage. In the latter, Cheung plays the real-life silent cinema star Ruan Lingyu, the quote-unquote “Greta Garbo of China,” who starred in a few major Chinese silent melodramas before committing suicide at the age of 24. Fatima (Nadia Melliti), 17, the youngest of three daughters, treads carefully as she searches for her own path, grappling with emerging desires, her attraction to women, and her loyalty to her caring French-Algerian family. Starting university in Paris, she dates, makes friends, and explores a whole new world, all while confronting a timeless and heartrending dilemma: How can one stay true to oneself when reconciling different parts of one’s identity feels impossible? With Return to Seoul star Park Ji-min in a supporting role, Hafsia Herzi’s The Little Sister (La Petite Dernière) premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, where the film won the Queer Palm and Melliti went on to win Best Actress against stiff competition. The film was later nominated for six César awards (the French equivalent to the Oscars) with Melliti again winning in the Best Female Newcomer category.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. In 2020, he founded Ope Outdoors, a brand that celebrates Missouri and Illinois landscapes through graphic design, group hikes and community cleanups. “We do have vibrant outdoor culture here, and it was just odd to me that we didn’t have a brand celebrating these parks and places.”

Fatima (Nadia Melliti), 17, the youngest of three daughters, treads carefully as she searches for her own path, grappling with emerging desires, her attraction to women, and her loyalty to her caring French-Algerian family. Starting university in Paris, she dates, makes friends, and explores a whole new world, all while confronting a timeless and heartrending dilemma: How can one stay true to oneself when reconciling different parts of one’s identity feels impossible? American Doctor is a vérité documentary following three prominent physicians–Palestinian, Jewish and Zoroastrian—friends who couldn’t be more different but are bound by the shared oath to save lives. Dr. Thaer Ahmad is measured and strategic, Dr. Mark Perlmutter is blunt and wears his heart on his sleeve, and Dr. Feroze Sidhwa is media-savvy and prolific. Filmed in unfolding, on-the-ground scenes, the story follows them from a Gazan hospital under siege, to the halls of Congress. Together they fight to keep a promise to their Palestinian colleagues and patients, to continue the struggle where it matters most: the United States. A breakaway hit at the Sundance and True/False film festivals earlier this year, American Doctor comes from Poh Si Teng, producer of the Oscar-nominated St. Louis Superman.

The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) is one of the largest and most important festivals for artistic animated film in Europe and worldwide and it is an Oscar-qualifying film festival.

Outstanding films tell grand stories or shed light on small everyday moments. Their creators dare to explore new grounds – whether through their personal family tales or innovative animation techniques and visual worlds. Who has ever seen dancing bin bags, or an entire film drawn on toilet paper? Best of ITFS presents this and more – including award-winning films from the International Competition, the Student Competition and the Trickstar Nature Award 2025.

Paothong’s photographs invite viewers to experience nature from perspectives rarely seen by human eyes. From microscopic butterfly eggs and the iridescent scales of insect wings to endangered amphibians, elusive mammals, birds in flight, and expansive prairie landscapes beneath star-filled skies, each image uncovers remarkable moments that often take years of patience, preparation, and technical innovation to capture.

Known for combining artistic vision with a deep commitment to conservation, Paothong photographs wildlife in ways that emphasize not only the beauty of individual species, but also the habitats that sustain them. His work explores the relationships between animals, plants, and ecosystems while highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity in an era of rapid environmental change.

Paothong is an internationally acclaimed conservation photographer whose work has been published by National Geographic, Audubon, Nature Conservancy Magazine, The New York Times, BBC Wildlife, and numerous other publications. His photographs have earned recognition in many of the world’s most prestigious nature photography competitions and have helped bring attention to endangered species and threatened habitats throughout North America and beyond.

Running consecutively as a companion exhibit will be photos by St. Louis artist Juno Musonda. In “WILLED,” Musonda presents a multi-media assemblage of photography, film, typography and Riso prints exploring three Missouri state parks through the individuals who assembled and gave the land that became them: Hawn State Park, Don Robinson State Park and Elephant Rocks State Park.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. In 2020, he founded Ope Outdoors, a brand that celebrates Missouri and Illinois landscapes through graphic design, group hikes and community cleanups. “We do have vibrant outdoor culture here, and it was just odd to me that we didn’t have a brand celebrating these parks and places.”

What happens if rays take over the world? What if the glaciers melt and the sea levels rise? What if the world suffocates in smog and plastic waste? How does a society change when natural resources are no longer sufficient for everyone? Do we retreat and resign ourselves to defeat, or do we take radical action to save the world after all? One of the most influential political films in history (not to mention the film Bob watches while relaxing in One Battle After Another), The Battle of Algiers, by Gillo Pontecorvo, vividly re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. As violence escalates on both sides, children shoot soldiers at point-blank range, women plant bombs in cafés, and French soldiers resort to torture to break the will of the insurgents. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Pontecorvo’s tour de force has astonishing relevance today. With a typically terrific score by Ennio Morricone.

From microscopic butterfly eggs and the iridescent scales of insect wings to endangered amphibians, elusive mammals, birds in flight, and expansive prairie landscapes beneath star-filled skies, each image uncovers remarkable moments that often take years of patience, preparation, and technical innovation to capture.

Known for combining artistic vision with a deep commitment to conservation, Paothong photographs wildlife in ways that emphasize not only the beauty of individual species, but also the habitats that sustain them. His work explores the relationships between animals, plants, and ecosystems while highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity in an era of rapid environmental change.

Paothong is an internationally acclaimed conservation photographer whose work has been published by National Geographic, Audubon, Nature Conservancy Magazine, The New York Times, BBC Wildlife, and numerous other publications. His photographs have earned recognition in many of the world’s most prestigious nature photography competitions and have helped bring attention to endangered species and threatened habitats throughout North America and beyond.

Running consecutively as a companion exhibit will be photos by St. Louis artist Juno Musonda. In “WILLED,” Musonda presents a multi-media assemblage of photography, film, typography and Riso prints exploring three Missouri state parks through the individuals who assembled and gave the land that became them: Hawn State Park, Don Robinson State Park and Elephant Rocks State Park.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. In 2020, he founded Ope Outdoors, a brand that celebrates Missouri and Illinois landscapes through graphic design, group hikes and community cleanups. “We do have vibrant outdoor culture here, and it was just odd to me that we didn’t have a brand celebrating these parks and places.”

The Webster Film Series was the third exhibitor in the nation to book 2024 indie breakout smash Hundreds of Beavers for a regular run. This $150,000-budgeted, self-distributed movie is still going strong years later, now returning to our screen for the third time on its current “Back to School” tour. A party movie of the sort you’re always wanting to see but can very rarely find, the made-in-Wisconsin Hundreds of Beavers feels like if Guy Maddin took a stab at making a family movie and missed the mark a little. Our hero is a 19th century applejack salesman who falls in love with a local furrier and is made to deliver, yes, hundreds of beavers (played by humans in mascot costumes) so as to impress her overbearing father. The black and white, mostly silent Hundreds of Beavers will remind you of a live-action Looney Tunes, or maybe Tom & Jerry, but with more than a whiff of the great silent comedians (the Chaplin of The Gold Rush and the Keaton of Seven Chances most especially), and/or maybe Scott Pilgrim and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Barbara Forever is an expansive, immersive exploration of the life, work, and ongoing cultural impact of filmmaker Barbara Hammer – a pioneering visual artist who lived boldly, created urgently, and transformed cinema through her singular vision. Her films were an extension of herself: sensual, experimental, and unapologetically lesbian, rooted in a profound desire for connection and an insistence on telling her own story. Driven by her canon of over eighty films, a vast collection of unreleased archival materials, and extensive audio interviews, Brydie O’Connor’s portrait allows for Hammer’s voice and images to shine through, becoming both a tribute and an extension of her legacy.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. New 35mm print!

Set just prior to the start of the 21st century, this vaguely futuristic story follows two residents of a quickly crumbling building who refuse to leave their homes in spite of a virus that has forced the evacuation of the area. As rain pours down relentlessly, a single man (Tsai regular Lee Kang-sheng) is stuck with an unfinished plumbing job and a hole in his floor. This results in a very odd relationship with the woman (Yang Kuei-mei, Goodbye, Dragon Inn) who lives below him. Combining deadpan humor with an austere view of loneliness and a couple of unexpected musical numbers, Tsai Ming-Liang crafted one of the most original films of the 1990s. J. Hoberman, who called it one of the ten best films of 1999 in the Village Voice when it was first released, recently wrote in the New York Times that The Hole was “Impressive a quarter century ago… even more so today.”

One of the most influential political films in history (not to mention the film Bob watches while relaxing in One Battle After Another), The Battle of Algiers, by Gillo Pontecorvo, vividly re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. As violence escalates on both sides, children shoot soldiers at point-blank range, women plant bombs in cafés, and French soldiers resort to torture to break the will of the insurgents. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Pontecorvo’s tour de force has astonishing relevance today. With a typically terrific score by Ennio Morricone.

From microscopic butterfly eggs and the iridescent scales of insect wings to endangered amphibians, elusive mammals, birds in flight, and expansive prairie landscapes beneath star-filled skies, each image uncovers remarkable moments that often take years of patience, preparation, and technical innovation to capture.

Known for combining artistic vision with a deep commitment to conservation, Paothong photographs wildlife in ways that emphasize not only the beauty of individual species, but also the habitats that sustain them. Amid stifling heat and pervasive drought, Isabel (Jorrybell Agoto), a 17-year-old Ilokana from the rural north, works at a posh country club outside Manila, lining up golf balls for powerful men to drive into the verdant horizon. New to the job, she wanders the immaculate grounds sampling its luxuries as members, including an industrialist and his expatriate niece, the club president and his pampered wife, and a slew of Chinese tourists, engage in a complex dance with the club’s doting and subservient staff. But something is rotting beneath the pristine fairways of the elite resort, as Isabel discovers when she tries to return a mislaid golf club to its patriarchal director, Dr. Palanca (Teroy Guzman). The deeper she journeys into its most exclusive corners, the closer she gets to the violent truths of the club, her native Philippines, and her own past. From executive producer Jia Zhangke, Filipiñana was a hit at this year’s Sundance, Berlin, and New York Asian film festivals.

His work explores the relationships between animals, plants, and ecosystems while highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity in an era of rapid environmental change.

Paothong is an internationally acclaimed conservation photographer whose work has been published by National Geographic, Audubon, Nature Conservancy Magazine, The New York Times, BBC Wildlife, and numerous other publications. His photographs have earned recognition in many of the world’s most prestigious nature photography competitions and have helped bring attention to endangered species and threatened habitats throughout North America and beyond.

Running consecutively as a companion exhibit will be photos by St. Louis artist Juno Musonda. In “WILLED,” Musonda presents a multi-media assemblage of photography, film, typography and Riso prints exploring three Missouri state parks through the individuals who assembled and gave the land that became them: Hawn State Park, Don Robinson State Park and Elephant Rocks State Park.

Musonda explained, “It’s easy to believe that the individual no longer matters. That our voices are too small, our actions too insignificant, and that lasting change belongs only to institutions or those with extraordinary influence. If these places teach us anything, it is that influence is not reserved for the powerful. It belongs to anyone willing to leave the world better than they found it.”

Musonda uses natural light and vibrant colors to reflect his childhood in Lusaka, Zambia, and South City St. Louis. In 2020, he founded Ope Outdoors, a brand that celebrates Missouri and Illinois landscapes through graphic design, group hikes and community cleanups. “We do have vibrant outdoor culture here, and it was just odd to me that we didn’t have a brand celebrating these parks and places.”

Free and open to the public. Registration is open.
