In Hong Sangsoo’s 33rd feature film What Does That Nature Say to You, Donghwa (Ha Seongguk, By the Stream) is a fledgling poet in his thirties. He rejects material aspirations and seeks to lead a life dedicated to truth and beauty. On a lazy afternoon, he drives his girlfriend, Junhee (Kang Soyi, A Traveler’s Needs), back to her parents’ home outside Seoul. In the driveway, they run into her father (Kwon Haehyo, star of Walk Up, here in his eleventh Hong film), who is strangely interested in Donghwa’s dinged up old car. He takes it for a spin around the block, then invites Donghwa to stay and meet the family: him, his wife (Cho Yunhee, By the Stream), who also writes poetry, and Junhee’s reclusive sister (Park Miso, By the Stream), who practices the gayageum, a traditional string instrument. They end up wiling away the day together, visiting a temple by the river, climbing the hill near the house, watching the sunset, and, sure enough, imbibing drinks. (This a Hong Sangsoo film, after all!) Egged on by Junhee’s dad, Donghwa gets progressively more drunk as the day advances. Finally, he makes a fool of himself at dinner. Then everything begins to unravel for the poet: his relationship, his art, his revolutionary ideals.

Through stunning photography and videography, this exhibition challenges societal stereotypes by showcasing the diverse personalities, passions, and vibrant lives of individuals with Down syndrome. In a world where assumptions often shape how we perceive others, Belonging shifts the narrative. Featuring families from the Greater St. Louis area, the exhibit underscores the fundamental truth that every individual, regardless of ability, has a story worth telling, a life worth celebrating, and a place where they truly belong.

About the Artist
Renowned photographer Randy Bacon—known for his compelling portrait, commercial, and documentary photography—has masterfully blended storytelling, portraits, and videography to showcase each individuals’ essence—from moments of joyful self-expression to quiet reflections of strength and resilience. Bacon, co-founder of the nonprofit 8 Billion Ones, is dedicated to using photography and storytelling to illuminate the uniqueness of every individual. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, and he brings his passion for storytelling to this heartfelt project.

After cutting his teeth as a screenwriter for television and movies, Wong Kar Wai made his debut as director with 1988’s As Tears Go By, a hit in its native Hong Kong (its box office there wouldn’t be surpassed by anything else Wong made until 2013’s The Grandmaster), and which went on to play the International Critics’ Week sidebar at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. With HK superstars Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs), Jacky Cheung (Bullet in the Head), and Wong favorite Maggie Cheung, then known mostly for arm-candy roles in Jackie Chan movies, in her first of five features with him. As Tears Go By stood as Wong’s only traditionally-scripted film for many years—with a plot noticeably influenced by Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets—but to a sharp eye points in the direction of his future style. (Well, maybe not that Top Gun needle drop…)

Anna, an artist, and Magnús, a fisherman, live with their three children and charismatic sheepdog (winner of the Palme Dog at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival) in the quiet grandeur of the Icelandic countryside. As the fractures in their marriage come to the surface, the couple try to hold onto the afterimages of a life together and make sense of a deep and lingering devotion. In a world where assumptions often shape how we perceive others, Belonging shifts the narrative. Featuring families from the Greater St. Louis area, the exhibit underscores the fundamental truth that every individual, regardless of ability, has a story worth telling, a life worth celebrating, and a place where they truly belong.

About the Artist
Renowned photographer Randy Bacon—known for his compelling portrait, commercial, and documentary photography—has masterfully blended storytelling, portraits, and videography to showcase each individuals’ essence—from moments of joyful self-expression to quiet reflections of strength and resilience. Bacon, co-founder of the nonprofit 8 Billion Ones, is dedicated to using photography and storytelling to illuminate the uniqueness of every individual. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, and he brings his passion for storytelling to this heartfelt project.

Through stunning photography and videography, this exhibition challenges societal stereotypes by showcasing the diverse personalities, passions, and vibrant lives of individuals with Down syndrome. In a world where assumptions often shape how we perceive others, Belonging shifts the narrative. Featuring families from the Greater St. Louis area, the exhibit underscores the fundamental truth that every individual, regardless of ability, has a story worth telling, a life worth celebrating, and a place where they truly belong.

About the Artist
Renowned photographer Randy Bacon—known for his compelling portrait, commercial, and documentary photography—has masterfully blended storytelling, portraits, and videography to showcase each individuals’ essence—from moments of joyful self-expression to quiet reflections of strength and resilience. Bacon, co-founder of the nonprofit 8 Billion Ones, is dedicated to using photography and storytelling to illuminate the uniqueness of every individual. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, and he brings his passion for storytelling to this heartfelt project.

O-VOID — a game in which players avoid obstacles within spinning circles.
Ovoid — an egg-shaped form.
Oh (the) void — an utterance.

This exhibition gathers these meanings into a suspended world—held in tension, sometimes in balance, always susceptible to disturbance. Drawing from the myth of Leda and the swan, the carousel ring grab, and an advancing army of unicorns, the works construct a provisional equilibrium. A shift as light as a breeze could recalibrate the whole.

The sculptures and their viewers act upon one another, capable of instigating chain reactions. In this way, the works and those who encounter them inhabit the same unstable field.

Leda’s presence is implied. Instead, we are presented with Zeus: the swan emerging from a golden egg. The egg—rendered as a zeppelin—suggests transformation, though of what kind remains uncertain. The ring grab, an oversized brass ring, hangs in precarious counterweight to the offal of industry. In the background, an army of unicorns advances, perpetually unsettled by a glitter-studded gear that grinds as it turns.

Beneath this apparent chaos lies a persistent aspiration: to render it intelligible. Geometric description becomes a method of containment—a way to hold what might otherwise overwhelm. As in Ovid's Metamorphoses, transformation is never neutral; emergence carries consequence.

Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts is pleased to announce their upcoming production of In a Word by Lauren Yee. The production will take place in The Dorothy “Dottie” Marshall Englis Theatre (470 E Lockwood Ave, Webster Groves, MO 63119).

Today is the two-year anniversary of Fiona’s son’s disappearance, and still, nothing makes sense to her—not her blasé husband, the incompetent detective, or the neighborhood kidnapper who keeps introducing himself in the checkout line. As Fiona delves back into her memories of that fateful day, to uncover that crucial missing piece, grief and comedy collide, and ordinary turns of phrase take on dangerous new meanings.

Screening in 35mm!

Every major Chinese-language director seems to make at least one wuxia in their career—Ang Lee with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hou Hsiao-hsien with The Assassin, Zhang Yimou with Hero, etc.—and 1994’s Ashes of Time is Wong’s. Based on legendary Chinese text The Eagle Shooting Heroes, by Louis Cha (which book Wong says is as vital to Chinese culture as The Lord of the Rings is to English culture), Wong does not exclusively draw within the lines of the novel. Ashes of Time alternates between three of the novel’s four main characters, Ouyang Feng (Leslie Cheung), Huang Yaoshi (Tony Leung Kar Fai), and Hong Qi (Jacky Cheung), as well as the Wong-invented character of The Blind Swordsman (played by Wong regular Tony Leung Chiu-wai), and with Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin, Carina Lau, and many more in smaller roles. Wong, ever the tinkerer, kept working on Ashes of Time for many years after its initial release, and in 2008 premiered this new cut, Ashes of Time Redux, which, among other things, featured a new score with cello solos performed by Yo-Yo Ma.

Through stunning photography and videography, this exhibition challenges societal stereotypes by showcasing the diverse personalities, passions, and vibrant lives of individuals with Down syndrome. In a world where assumptions often shape how we perceive others, Belonging shifts the narrative. Featuring families from the Greater St. Louis area, the exhibit underscores the fundamental truth that every individual, regardless of ability, has a story worth telling, a life worth celebrating, and a place where they truly belong.

About the Artist
Renowned photographer Randy Bacon—known for his compelling portrait, commercial, and documentary photography—has masterfully blended storytelling, portraits, and videography to showcase each individuals’ essence—from moments of joyful self-expression to quiet reflections of strength and resilience. Bacon, co-founder of the nonprofit 8 Billion Ones, is dedicated to using photography and storytelling to illuminate the uniqueness of every individual. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, and he brings his passion for storytelling to this heartfelt project.

With a seed for the film planted in Wong’s head in 1996, then going into early pre-production around 2006, Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster was to be the first film about Bruce Lee’s trainer Ip Man, who at the time was not terribly well-known. Wong’s endless production process once again got the better of him, though, and by the time The Grandmaster was released in 2013 it was the fifth Ip Man film released, after the first two with Donnie Yen and a couple directed by Herman Yau. Fun as those films are, Wong’s was worth the wait. Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who did his first-ever kung fu training at age 47 for this role, is Ip, playing opposite Zhang Ziyi’s Gong Er, a role created specifically for her. With fight choreography by Yuen Woo-ping (who served a similar role on the sets of the Matrix trilogy, the Kill Bill movies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and many more), cinematography by Sofia Coppola favorite Philippe Le Sourd (The Beguiled, Priscilla), and produced by Megan Ellison at Annapurna Pictures (Spring Breakers, Sausage Party).

O-VOID — a game in which players avoid obstacles within spinning circles.
Ovoid — an egg-shaped form.
Oh (the) void — an utterance.

This exhibition gathers these meanings into a suspended world—held in tension, sometimes in balance, always susceptible to disturbance. Drawing from the myth of Leda and the swan, the carousel ring grab, and an advancing army of unicorns, the works construct a provisional equilibrium. A shift as light as a breeze could recalibrate the whole.

The sculptures and their viewers act upon one another, capable of instigating chain reactions. In this way, the works and those who encounter them inhabit the same unstable field.

Days of Being Wild, Wong Kar Wai’s second film as director, is widely considered the first of his to exude the “Wong Kar Wai style.” But what is that? Romantic longing, here embodied by some of Hong Kong’s biggest stars and Wong’s best collaborators, including As Tears Go By’s Maggie Cheung and Andy Lau as well as Wong’s first collaborations with Leslie Cheung and a barely-there Tony Leung. Gorgeous visuals and use of color in a 1960s setting, courtesy of DP Christopher Doyle, here also collaborating with Wong for the first time. O-VOID — a game in which players avoid obstacles within spinning circles.
Ovoid — an egg-shaped form.
Oh (the) void — an utterance.

This exhibition gathers these meanings into a suspended world—held in tension, sometimes in balance, always susceptible to disturbance. Drawing from the myth of Leda and the swan, the carousel ring grab, and an advancing army of unicorns, the works construct a provisional equilibrium. A shift as light as a breeze could recalibrate the whole.

The sculptures and their viewers act upon one another, capable of instigating chain reactions. In this way, the works and those who encounter them inhabit the same unstable field.

Through stunning photography and videography, this exhibition challenges societal stereotypes by showcasing the diverse personalities, passions, and vibrant lives of individuals with Down syndrome. In a world where assumptions often shape how we perceive others, Belonging shifts the narrative. Featuring families from the Greater St. Louis area, the exhibit underscores the fundamental truth that every individual, regardless of ability, has a story worth telling, a life worth celebrating, and a place where they truly belong.

About the Artist
Renowned photographer Randy Bacon—known for his compelling portrait, commercial, and documentary photography—has masterfully blended storytelling, portraits, and videography to showcase each individuals’ essence—from moments of joyful self-expression to quiet reflections of strength and resilience. Bacon, co-founder of the nonprofit 8 Billion Ones, is dedicated to using photography and storytelling to illuminate the uniqueness of every individual. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, and he brings his passion for storytelling to this heartfelt project.

Native St. Louis musician Ian Buschmann performs his penultimate graduate recital in his pursuit of becoming a master of music. Ian is joined by Vincent Young on drums and Seth Miranda on bass. The chordless trio will explore familiar standards, original compositions, and otherwise notable and sentimental songs which pay homage to revered chordless trios of past and present. Whether or not the trio will adhere to the rehearsed form of each piece is up for question!

Days of Being Wild, Wong Kar Wai’s second film as director, is widely considered the first of his to exude the “Wong Kar Wai style.” But what is that? Romantic longing, here embodied by some of Hong Kong’s biggest stars and Wong’s best collaborators, including As Tears Go By’s Maggie Cheung and Andy Lau as well as Wong’s first collaborations with Leslie Cheung and a barely-there Tony Leung. Gorgeous visuals and use of color in a 1960s setting, courtesy of DP Christopher Doyle, here also collaborating with Wong for the first time. Impeccably curated, multi-cultural music cues, including Cantopop superstars Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, not to mention the Catalan-Cuban-American icon Xavier Cugat. But what’s it about? Everything! O-VOID — a game in which players avoid obstacles within spinning circles.
Ovoid — an egg-shaped form.
Oh (the) void — an utterance.

This exhibition gathers these meanings into a suspended world—held in tension, sometimes in balance, always susceptible to disturbance. Drawing from the myth of Leda and the swan, the carousel ring grab, and an advancing army of unicorns, the works construct a provisional equilibrium. A shift as light as a breeze could recalibrate the whole.

The sculptures and their viewers act upon one another, capable of instigating chain reactions. In this way, the works and those who encounter them inhabit the same unstable field.

Leda’s presence is implied. Instead, we are presented with Zeus: the swan emerging from a golden egg. The egg—rendered as a zeppelin—suggests transformation, though of what kind remains uncertain. The ring grab, an oversized brass ring, hangs in precarious counterweight to the offal of industry. In the background, an army of unicorns advances, perpetually unsettled by a glitter-studded gear that grinds as it turns.

Beneath this apparent chaos lies a persistent aspiration: to render it intelligible. Geometric description becomes a method of containment—a way to hold what might otherwise overwhelm. As in Ovid's Metamorphoses, transformation is never neutral; emergence carries consequence.

Credited as the film that gave Wong Kar Wai his international break, 1994’s Chungking Express was made in about three months while Wong and the gang were on a recess from the lengthy production of Ashes of Time. Shot “CNN-style” (meaning: with no permits) by Andrew Lau (later the director of the Infernal Affairs trilogy) and Christopher Doyle, Chungking Express is broken into two parts. The first is set in and around the Chungking Mansions in Tsimshatsui and follows Japanese/Taiwanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro’s lovelorn Cop 223 and Brigitte Lin’s icy, blonde-wigged drug runner. The second story is set in Central, in and around Lan Kwai Fong and the Mid-levels, and follows Tony Leung’s lovelorn Cop 663 and new employee May (Cantopop superstar Faye Wong, who also contributes to the soundtrack) at his favorite haunt, the Midnight Express. You’ll never look at canned pineapple or hear “California Dreamin’” the same way again.

O-VOID — a game in which players avoid obstacles within spinning circles.
Ovoid — an egg-shaped form.
Oh (the) void — an utterance.

This exhibition gathers these meanings into a suspended world—held in tension, sometimes in balance, always susceptible to disturbance. Drawing from the myth of Leda and the swan, the carousel ring grab, and an advancing army of unicorns, the works construct a provisional equilibrium. A shift as light as a breeze could recalibrate the whole.

The sculptures and their viewers act upon one another, capable of instigating chain reactions. In this way, the works and those who encounter them inhabit the same unstable field.

Leda’s presence is implied. Instead, we are presented with Zeus: the swan emerging from a golden egg. The egg—rendered as a zeppelin—suggests transformation, though of what kind remains uncertain. The ring grab, an oversized brass ring, hangs in precarious counterweight to the offal of industry. In the background, an army of unicorns advances, perpetually unsettled by a glitter-studded gear that grinds as it turns.

Beneath this apparent chaos lies a persistent aspiration: to render it intelligible. Geometric description becomes a method of containment—a way to hold what might otherwise overwhelm. As in Ovid's Metamorphoses, transformation is never neutral; emergence carries consequence.

When Orsolya (Eszter Tompa) oversees the eviction of a local elderly man in Cluj, Transylvania, the unintended consequences come to shatter her and her understanding of her place in society. Spiraling into an existential crisis, she traverses the city, meeting with various people in her life — her husband, an old friend, her former student, a priest — to consider and reconcile her place in an increasingly maddening modern world in Radu Jude’s latest furious and hysterical moral parable. Jude, known to Film Series audiences for 2024’s hit Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (not to mention 2016 hit Aferim!, last year’s bonkers three-hour Dracula, 2021’s Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, etc etc), here crafts a film that is equal measures absurdist and social realist. It deals with how we live now, but with a fascination with dinosaurs that rivals that of The Tree of Life.

Through stunning photography and videography, this exhibition challenges societal stereotypes by showcasing the diverse personalities, passions, and vibrant lives of individuals with Down syndrome. In a world where assumptions often shape how we perceive others, Belonging shifts the narrative. Featuring families from the Greater St. Louis area, the exhibit underscores the fundamental truth that every individual, regardless of ability, has a story worth telling, a life worth celebrating, and a place where they truly belong.

About the Artist
Renowned photographer Randy Bacon—known for his compelling portrait, commercial, and documentary photography—has masterfully blended storytelling, portraits, and videography to showcase each individuals’ essence—from moments of joyful self-expression to quiet reflections of strength and resilience. Bacon, co-founder of the nonprofit 8 Billion Ones, is dedicated to using photography and storytelling to illuminate the uniqueness of every individual. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, and he brings his passion for storytelling to this heartfelt project.

Like 1994’s Chungking Express, 1995’s Fallen Angels follows two separate plotlines. One is about a killer (Leon Lai) and his agent (Michelle Reis) and was originally intended to be a third story in Chungking Express. The other is the much lighter tale of a mute petty criminal (Takeshi Kaneshiro), whose reasons for losing the ability to speak will resonate with Chungking Express fans, and his interactions with a woman (Charlie Yeung) whom he often runs into. Echoing Chungking Express with character names, plot points, and more, Fallen Angels makes for both an interesting companion piece to that film or as a standalone work, one of the darker entries in Wong’s oeuvre.

O-VOID — a game in which players avoid obstacles within spinning circles.
Ovoid — an egg-shaped form.
Oh (the) void — an utterance.

This exhibition gathers these meanings into a suspended world—held in tension, sometimes in balance, always susceptible to disturbance. Drawing from the myth of Leda and the swan, the carousel ring grab, and an advancing army of unicorns, the works construct a provisional equilibrium. A shift as light as a breeze could recalibrate the whole.

The sculptures and their viewers act upon one another, capable of instigating chain reactions. In this way, the works and those who encounter them inhabit the same unstable field.

Leda’s presence is implied. Instead, we are presented with Zeus: the swan emerging from a golden egg. The egg—rendered as a zeppelin—suggests transformation, though of what kind remains uncertain. The ring grab, an oversized brass ring, hangs in precarious counterweight to the offal of industry. In the background, an army of unicorns advances, perpetually unsettled by a glitter-studded gear that grinds as it turns.

Beneath this apparent chaos lies a persistent aspiration: to render it intelligible. Geometric description becomes a method of containment—a way to hold what might otherwise overwhelm. As in Ovid's Metamorphoses, transformation is never neutral; emergence carries consequence.

Credited as the film that gave Wong Kar Wai his international break, 1994’s Chungking Express was made in about three months while Wong and the gang were on a recess from the lengthy production of Ashes of Time. Shot “CNN-style” (meaning: with no permits) by Andrew Lau (later the director of the Infernal Affairs trilogy) and Christopher Doyle, Chungking Express is broken into two parts. The first is set in and around the Chungking Mansions in Tsimshatsui and follows Japanese/Taiwanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro’s lovelorn Cop 223 and Brigitte Lin’s icy, blonde-wigged drug runner. The second story is set in Central, in and around Lan Kwai Fong and the Mid-levels, and follows Tony Leung’s lovelorn Cop 663 and new employee May (Cantopop superstar Faye Wong, who also contributes to the soundtrack) at his favorite haunt, the Midnight Express. You’ll never look at canned pineapple or hear “California Dreamin’” the same way again.

REGGIE THOMAS

Pianist Reggie Thomas is based in the midwest between Chicago and St. Louis but, since his recent retirement as Coordinator/Director of the internationally recognized Northern Illinois University School of Music's Jazz Studies program, he has even more liberty to spend time performing all over this country and in other parts of the world. NIU’s Jazz Orchestra has been featured at venues such as the Chicago Jazz Festival and recently was selected to perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center for the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship. Reggie came to NIU from the Michigan State University College of Music, where he served as Professor of Jazz Piano. Prior to his position at MSU, he was Professor of Music at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and was SIUE's Director of Black Studies.

Reggie has performed at festivals around the world – St. Louis Jazz Festival in Senegal, West Africa; The Montreal International Jazz Festival; and The Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. He now spends a great deal of time as pianist for the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra with whom he performed at a festival before the King of Thailand and in many other parts of the world. Thomas has performed abroad in Brisbane, Calgary, London, Milan, Montreal, Poznan, Senegal, Sydney, Toronto, Trinidad and Warsaw. He has also performed across the US in cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle.

As a recording artist Thomas has appeared as a leader or co-leader on several recordings. The most recent, Matters of the Heart (with wife Mardra), followed previous recordings Fade to Blue (Mack Avenue Records), Standard Time (Victoria) and 4 (Jazz Compass). Recordings as a sideman include Clay Jenkins’ Yellow Flowers After (Chase Music Group) and Azure Eyes (Chase Music Group), Kim Richmond’s Ballads (Chase Music Group) and Inner Spirit (Jazz Compass), Clark Terry/Mike Vax’ Creepin’ With Clark (Summit) and the MSU Professors of Jazz Better Than Alright.

Reggie remains active with some of the top institutions in jazz and music education including 2023 Juror for The American Pianist Association and recent travel to South Africa to serve as a juror for the 14th Unisa International Piano Competition 2020. Since 2018 he has served as the ensemble coach for NYO Jazz Orchestra, a national youth jazz orchestra created by The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall and teaches for their Summer Music Educators Workshops. From 2004-16, he served as a clinician and education consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center, working with the Essentially Ellington Program and Band Director Academy. Since 2011 he has worked with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz (formerly the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz) serving as accompanist for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competitions.

Thomas has directed All State Jazz Bands, Combos and Jazz Choirs in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, South Dakota and Tennessee and directed the first ever Missouri All-College Jazz Band. He has served on summer jazz faculties across the country and abroad including the IAJE Teacher Training Institute, the Birch Creek Music Center, the Eastman School of Music Summer Jazz Camp, the Summer Jazz Academy in Chodziez, Poland, the Barbican Center in London, and the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Reggie was an early recipient of the Excellence in the Arts award from the Greater St. Louis Arts and Education Council and has been named in Riverfront Times "Best of St. Louis" as Best Jazz Artist.

The Cannes Film Festival has been vital to Wong Kar Wai’s international reputation and Happy Together, his sixth feature as director, was the first of his films to play in the prestigious competition category there. Under a jury led by president Isabelle Adjani (yes, the subject of our popular Adjanuary program from earlier this year), Wong went on to win the best director prize with this outing. Happy Together is Wong’s only film that explicitly focuses on LGBTQIA+ characters (“explicit” a bit more operative a term here than intended, as this is also his only film to get the Category III designation in Hong Kong), with his two leads being Tony Leung’s Lai Yiu-fai and Leslie’s Cheung’s Ho Po-wing, who together are on a road trip through Argentina. Their combustive on-again, off-again relationship is at the heart of this film, with a young Chang Chen (here in his third film ever, after Edward Yang films A Brighter Summer Day and Mahjong, and shortly before his international breakthrough in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) hovering right on the periphery.

Based on a novel by master wuxia writer Jin Yong, also the author of the source material for Ashes of Time, the original Swordsman film had a bit of a troubled production. Greatest-ever wuxia director King Hu (A Touch of Zen, Dragon Inn, The Fate of Lee Khan) was set to direct, and did at first, only to leave mid-production. He was replaced by a crop of different directors, with sources citing as few as one (producer Tsui Hark) or as many as five, stepping in when he was gone. It’s fine, though, as Hark inevitably steered the series in a hugely fun direction. Swordsman is the stateliest of the three films, concerning a valuable scroll that is stolen from the emperor and the army detachment sent to retrieve it. With Jacky Cheung (As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild), Cecilia Yip (Nomad, Center Stage), and many more.
