Made in India (2010) – 95 minutes, Chicken and Egg Pictures

This documentary reveals the complexities of “reproductive tourism” as it follows 27-year old Aasia, a mother of three who lives in a Mumbai slum. Aasia is a gestational surrogate for Lisa and Brian Switzer from San Antonio, Texas. Surrogacy services top at $25,000, which is three times less than the $100,000 cost in the United States, and there are no Indian laws regulating surrogacy. Questions of reproductive rights, children’s rights, and the nature of motherhood are explored in this film.
