Transforming Students: Peter Felten, Kemper Speaker

Provost Julian Schuster invites the Webster University community to a presentation by Peter Felten, the third Annual William T. Kemper Speaker on Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Friday, Nov. 21, from 1-2 p.m. in the East Academic Building, Room 253. The presentation will be followed by questions and refreshments until 2:30 p.m.

Felten will discuss transformational learning, the topic of his new book, Transforming Students, which explores the processes of the college experience that are life-changing for students. Drawing from the narratives of students, faculty and others, the book illustrates the central concepts of the growing literature about learning experiences that are transformative in their outcomes. Felten’s work will offer the Webster community insights into our own mission to “transform students for global citizenship and individual excellence.”

Felten is assistant provost for teaching and learning, executive director of the Center for Engaged Learning, and professor of history at Elon University. His publications include the co-authored books Transforming Students: Fulfilling the Promise of Higher Education (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014) and Engaging Students as Partners in Learning and Teaching (Jossey-Bass, 2014).

From 2010-2011, he served as president of the POD Network, an association for higher education teaching and learning centers; he currently is a vice president of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and co-editor of the International Journal for Academic Development.

The annual William T. Kemper Speaker on Excellence in Teaching & Learning is funded through the generosity of the William T. Kemper Foundation. The Kemper Foundation also funds the William T. Kemper Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is awarded annually to two full-time and two adjunct faculty members who exhibit the art of teaching at its finest.
