A jolly, old man, Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), discovers a drunk actor playing Santa in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara), Macy's special events director, persuades the old man to take his place. Doris is wary of Kringle’s claims to be the actual Santa Claus, especially after telling her daughter, Susan (Natalie Wood), to reject all notions of belief and fantasy. In the midst of commercialism and doubt, Kringle shows Susan and others the true spirit of Christmas. The film received three Academy Awards: Edmund Gwenn (Best Actor in a Supporting Role); Valentine Davies (Best Writing, Original Story); George Seaton (Best Writing, Screenplay).
