The Films of Wong Kar-Wai
(Wong Kar-Wai, 1997, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, 96 min.)
Young lovers Ho Po-Wing (Leslie Cheung) and Lai Yiu-Fai (Tony Leung) leave Hong Kong for Buenos Aires. As the novelty of the new scenery wanes, the couple painfully drifts apart. Lai, the responsible one, starts working at a tango club, while Ho turns to prostitution for money. Lai finds Ho battered and bruised after a violent encounter with a trick. Lai takes care of Ho, rekindling old feelings, but is unable to renew the relationship. Director Wong Kar-Wai and Cinematographer Christopher Doyle, using different film speeds and film stock, create an atmosphere that follows the couples’ decline. In Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish with English subtitles.
