(Delmer Daves, 1947, USA, 106 min.)
The third Bogie and Bacall collaboration, and the first without Howard Hawks at the helm, experiments with cinematic storytelling by literally putting you in Bogie’s shoes—the first half of the film is shot subjectively through his character Vincent Parry’s eyes. Noirishly aligning the viewer closely with someone with questionable motives, Parry is a murder convict recently escaped from prison, and aided and abetted by Bacall’s Irene Jansen, whose motives at first are also something less than lucid.
